Key Things to Know If You Are Injured at Work

State workers’ compensation insurance exists to cover medical care costs for individuals injured at work. Unfortunately, workers’ compensation insurance may not be in place for certain industries, such as for workers for the federal government or maritime industries, but most employers have this in place.

When you are injured at work, you should notify your employer and doctor as soon as possible. Your employer must allow you to file a claim.

When you open a workers’ compensation claim, your doctor will work with you to create a treatment plan. Your insurance will use information related to your case and your treatment to determine coverage.

If your doctor recommends acupuncture and/or if you request acupuncture to be a part of your treatment, you will need a referral from your doctor for your acupuncture treatments to be covered by your claim. This referral is what directs your acupuncture provider as to how many visits they get with you and the scope of treatment available.

Your claim may be able to help compensate for wages lost during the time you are being treated for your workplace injury. We recommend speaking directly with your insurer regarding this and other information regarding your claim for the best understanding of what benefits may be available to you.

Why Choose Acupuncture for Work Injury Recovery

Evidence supports the ability of acupuncture to relieve pain and anxiety, relax muscles, and alleviate muscle spasms. In fact, many people refer to acupuncture as a natural pain reliever.

Acupuncture works by inserting fine, hair-thin needles into the skin on locations of the body known as acupuncture points. In acupuncture and East Asian medicine, practitioners and researchers maintain that by balancing the body’s Qi, or energy, and by fixing blockages or interferences with Qi, symptoms and causes of illness, injury, pain, and more can be alleviated.

Acupuncture promotes the circulation of blood to alleviate aches and pains. Research also supports its ability to help change the chemistry of the body over time by releasing endorphins and other natural chemicals and compounds in the body. This can help to address not simply physical conditions, but mental ones, too. Evidence suggests a positive association between acupuncture treatments and the reduction of blood pressure, the reduction of scar tissue formation, the elimination of muscle spasms, the alleviation of pain, an increase in flexibility and mobility (which can mean a decrease in functional disability), the reduction of anxiety and stress, and the repair of muscle damage.

Acupuncture is a popular course of treatment recommended by physicians for rehabilitation following a workplace injury. Research supports acupuncture’s ability to treat:

  • Back Pain

  • Neck Pain

  • Shoulder Pain & Injury

  • Healing From Broken Bones

  • Headaches & Migraines

  • And more

How to Make Scheduling a Breeze

Our front office will help get you scheduled. We’ll work with you to find a provider, day, and time that works best for you and your schedule. We’ll also handle the billing so your experience with us is stress-free.

When you call to schedule, our wonderful receptionists will ask you several questions regarding your auto insurance. These questions are also available on your intake paperwork. If you need more time to collect some information, you’re welcome to include it there as well! You’ll be asked:

  • Which areas would you like looked at/what kind of treatment are you looking for?

  • Do you have a preference as to provider?

  • Do you have a physician’s referral for acupuncture in place? If not, can you get one?

  • What was the date of your accident? Can you provide a month, day, and year?

  • In which state did the accident take place?

  • Who is your workers compensation insurance/claim through?

  • Who is your employer?

  • What is your claim number?

  • What is the name of your medical adjuster?

  • What is a good phone number and/or email for your medical adjuster?
