Acupuncture for Neck Pain

Neck pain is a common condition for people around the world. According to an article from NPR by Angus Chen, an estimated 16% of Americans experience some sort of neck pain. Worldwide, 30-50% of adults report experiencing prevalent neck pain.

Chronic neck pain is not limited to a simple ache, however. In fact, studies as recent as 2010 reported that neck pain is “the third most common chronic condition causing persistent pain in the USA and the fourth leading cause of disability worldwide,” according to Sun et al. (2019). Folks with chronic neck pain may often find themselves missing out on work, favorite activities, and more due to their pain.

Many folks turn to pain medication, physical therapy, or other treatments to find relief from their neck pain. Unfortunately, these forms of treatment may not lead to long-lasting relief.

Acupuncture, however, offers an alternative. Acupuncture, electroacupuncture, and other East Asian medicine techniques can offer relief from chronic and acute neck pain without the side effects of many pain management medications.

In a 2015 study, researchers found that 70% of patients treated for neck pain with acupuncture recovered in the short-term, whereas they found that only 40% of patients found short-term relief when treated with pain medication. Similarly, 87% of study participants found long-lasting pain relief after acupuncture treatment. Compare that with the 68% who found long-lasting relief using pain medication.

Acupuncture treatment, in addition to providers’ lifestyle recommendations and other forms of routine care, often lead to more positive and long-lasting pain relief for patients experiencing neck pain. Acupuncture is often associated with relief from chronic pain of all sorts, and neck pain is no exception.

In fact, patients treated with acupuncture who reported limited mobility and pain prior to treatment often report improvements in pain, mobility, and even mood after treatment.
